Shimmering Butterflies

Great Friends

Great Friends

Not long now before the mini catalogue closes (November 30), so I thought I would make another card using the GREAT FRIENDS stamp set.  I just love this set and will use it for many years to come.

I will tell you at the end, how to make your butterflies shimmer.

STAMP SET:  Great Friend, En Francais

 CARD:  Chocolate Chip:  (base), Layer = 2 1/4″ x 2 3/4″

Pretty in Pink:  Layer 1 = 5″ x 3 1/4″, Layer 2 = 2″ x 2 1/2″

Whisper White:  Scrap for butterflies

INK:  Pretty in Pink, Chocolate Chip, VersaMark

Ribbon:  Chocolate Chip, 7”  (4”, 3” for knot)

EXTRAS:  Dimensionals, piercer and mat pack, Mini Glue Dots, Sponges, Heat Tool, Clear Embossing Powder, Dazzling Diamonds

Ink the background stamp with Pretty in Pink and stamp the two pieces of Pretty in Pink cardstock.

Ink the edges with Pretty in Pink using a sponge (Our sponges are sold – 3 round sponges in a pack.  Each sponge can be cut into 6 or 8).

I like to sponge lightly – my motto is “you can always add more”

When sponging with two colours, always start with the lighter colour.

Using Chocolate chip for the second sponging.   I like to  start sponging off the card  (Look at my yellow sheet, it is getting grubby)!

Using the leaf, stamp, ink with Chocolate Chip, then stamp again without inking up.  Do the same with Pretty in Pink.  (Remember to clean the stamp when changing colour)  Even if you start with the light colour, then use the dark, still clean the stamp.

Stamp, “Friend….” onto the lower left hand side of the smaller card, using Chocolate Chip ink.  (The right-hand side, will be for the ribbon and the top for placing the butterfly and piercing).

Using the Rock n Roll technique:

  1. Ink the butterfly with the light ink – in this case, Pretty in Pink.  (Always start with the light ink)
  2. Place one edge of the butterfly onto the Chocolate Chip ink pad and roll the stamp around the pad.  Make sure it is just the outer edges touching the ink pad.

With the image on the left, I rolled more towards the centre of the stamp.  The image on the right, shows that the stamp edges, just touched the ink pad.  Either one is ok.  Makes the butterflies different.

At this stage

  1. Cut out the butterflies
  2. VersaMark the whole image of the  butterflies
  3. Dip  into (or sprinkle) the embossing mixture
  4. Use the Heat Tool.  The butterflies will shimmer!

Stamp the leaf onto the Chocolate Chip.  Same again, ink, stamp and stamp again without re-inking.  (Second generation stamping)  Make sure that the leaf is stamped up the sides of the card as shown.

Added piercing
Added piercing

OPTIONAL:  Piercing

The card is now ready to assemble.

Close up of the butterfly.  Trust me, it shimmers!

Two heaped teaspoons of clear embossing powder to 1level teaspoon of dazzling diamonds.  (My up-line, Tina did this on one of her class cards and I just loved the shimmer).  I am not too sure on the right ratio – 2:1 or 2:1 1/2.  Try making a small batch first – note the ratio and then when you are happy with the mix ratio, you can make a bigger batch.  If the image looks “burnt” add less dazzling diamonds.  (It’s abit like cooking – no recipe, just a pinch of this and a pinch of that 🙂 )

Phew, this is my longest post – well it is a tutorial.

Made especially for TESS and my other ladies in my classes that couldn’t make it this week.
